The Take It Back Movement, a human rights group, took to the streets of Lagos State on Monday to protest against the escalating price of food and the overall high cost of living in Nigeria.
This demonstration comes in response to the warning issued by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, who assured that necessary measures would be implemented to safeguard the lives and property of Lagosians during the protest.
Despite the police presence and assurances of safety, members of the Take It Back Movement, along with other civil society organizations such as the Joint Action Front and the Coalition for Revolution, gathered at the Ojuelegba under the bridge area of the state to voice their grievances regarding the prevailing economic hardship across the country.
The protesters were seen carrying placards bearing various inscriptions, highlighting their concerns about the soaring prices of essential commodities and the burdensome cost of living. Their demonstration aimed to draw attention to the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians as they grapple with the economic fallout of inflation and rising food prices.
Accompanied by police officers and vehicles, as well as officers of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the protesters marched peacefully, advocating for solutions to alleviate the economic strain faced by citizens. The presence of law enforcement agencies ensured that the protest proceeded without disruption, allowing participants to exercise their right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
