The Federal Government has dismissed rumours circulating on social media that the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos is unstable and shaking.
The claims, which spread across platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook, alleged that a section of the iconic bridge had opened up, raising concerns about its structural integrity.
During a press briefing and inspection tour of the bridge on Thursday, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olukorede Kesha, refuted these allegations, describing them as unfounded and orchestrated by individuals with ulterior motives.
“The honourable minister has directed that I come out and tell Lagosians and Nigerians that there is nothing wrong with the bridge,” Kesha stated emphatically.
Accompanied by journalists, Kesha led an inspection of the entire 11-kilometer stretch of the bridge, underscoring the government’s commitment to public safety and transparency.
“We drove through the entire length of the bridge, back and forth, and observed that there is absolutely nothing amiss,” she explained.
“The rumour is the handiwork of mischief columnists – those who are idle and those who think the political atmosphere is too quiet for them.”
Reassuring the public, Kesha affirmed that the Third Mainland Bridge remains safe for use, emphasizing that its structural integrity is intact.
“We are using this opportunity to tell the motoring public, Lagosians, and all Nigerians that the bridge is safe. The integrity of the bridge is not in doubt,” she said.
Kesha also highlighted that ministry officials, alongside Lagos residents, continue to use the bridge daily, underscoring their confidence in its safety.
The Federal Government urged the public to disregard the rumours and exercise caution in sharing unverified information that could incite unnecessary panic.
