The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected reports and calls for its deregistration, insisting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had already affirmed before a court that the party remains a legally recognised and fully compliant political organisation.
In a statement issued by the party, the ADC said INEC clearly defended its status during court proceedings, maintaining that the party had met all constitutional and statutory requirements expected of registered political parties in Nigeria.
According to the ADC, the electoral commission informed the court that the party had neither breached any condition attached to its registration nor failed to meet any constitutionally prescribed electoral-performance threshold that could justify deregistration.
The party stressed that INEC’s position confirmed that there were no legal grounds for any attempt to remove the ADC from the list of recognised political parties in the country.
The ADC further stated that INEC emphasised before the court that political parties can only be deregistered based on provisions expressly recognised by law, and not on the basis of political pressure, public opinion or the interests of certain groups.
The party noted that the commission reportedly maintained that the deregistration of political parties must strictly follow due legal process and constitutional provisions guiding Nigeria’s democratic system.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles and political participation, the ADC described the calls for its deregistration as unfounded and politically motivated, adding that it would continue to operate within the framework of the law.
The party also urged its members and supporters across the country to remain calm and focused, insisting that its legal status as a registered political party remains intact.
