President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Nairobi in the early hours of Monday to attend the Africa Forward Summit, a high-level gathering focused on Africa’s economic transformation and partnerships. His aircraft touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at about 12:18 a.m. local time.

The President was received by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Isaac Parashina, and senior Kenyan officials, alongside members of Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Kenya. The Global Health Charity and Training Foundation has taken the lead in driving the Inclusive Health Insurance Enrolment Programme, known as I-HELP, to expand healthcare access in Nigeria.

‎The foundation, in partnership with the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria, P-SHAN, unveiled the initiative at a high-level fundraising dinner in Lagos.

‎Lead and Board Member of GHCTF, Dr. Adebayo Akintobi, says the programme is designed to close the healthcare access gap for vulnerable Nigerians.

‎He explains that the initiative combines health insurance enrolment with free medical services and capacity building.

‎The programme will be implemented in Lagos, Imo, Oyo, Delta, and Bayelsa states after a successful pilot phase was executed recently in Ogun State.

‎It targets enrolling at least two thousand indigent individuals per state in the first year.

Beneficiaries will receive free screenings, medications, and access to life-changing surgeries.

‎The initiative also includes telemedicine services and medical missions led by diaspora professionals.

‎Dr. Akintobi notes that the programme adopts a sustainable and scalable healthcare model.

‎According to Dr. Akintobi “This programme brings together expertise and compassion to ensure no Nigerian is denied care due to cost.”

‎At the launch, the Federal Government also endorsed the initiative as part of efforts to achieve universal health coverage.

‎The Minister of State for Health Dr Iziak Adekunle Salako who was represented by Mr Ogbonnaya Okpani says millions of Nigerians remain outside the formal insurance system.

He warns that high out-of-pocket payments continue to push households into poverty.

‎The Minister describes I-HELP as a strategic national tool for social protection and improved health outcomes.

‎He highlights that only about 21-point-7 million Nigerians are currently insured, mostly in the formal sector.

‎According to the Salako, “I-HELP is a national pathway to reduce poverty and ensure equitable healthcare access for all Nigerians.”

‎In the same vein, the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria(P-SHAN) says the initiative reflects a whole-of-society approach to healthcare reform.

‎Director of Policy and Programmes at P-SHAN, Dr. Anne-Adda Ogo, says collaboration is key to improving Nigeria’s health indices.

‎She explains that the alliance mobilises private sector resources into impactful health interventions.

‎She adds that all investments are guided by data, accountability, and measurable outcomes.

‎Dr. Adda Ogo notes “Together, we can lift the burden on Nigeria’s health system and ensure every naira delivers impact.”

‎Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, says the programme supports expanded insurance coverage for vulnerable groups.

‎She notes that philanthropists are being encouraged to fund enrolment for children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

‎The initiative aligns with national reforms under the current administration to scale up health insurance coverage.

‎Dr. Tomi Coker says “Health insurance is the most sustainable way to guarantee access to quality care for every Nigerian.”

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has called for increased female representation in the state’s political system, urging lawmakers to “make room for women” ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Wednesday at a funeral ceremony in Onu-Igbere, Bende Local Government Area, Alex Otti expressed concern that the Abia State House of Assembly currently has no female members, with all 24 seats occupied by men. He challenged the leadership of the Assembly to address the imbalance by creating opportunities for women to participate in governance.

The governor suggested that political leaders either consider expanding constituencies or encourage some male politicians to step aside to allow women to emerge. He noted that even introducing a few female lawmakers would mark significant progress compared to the current situation.

Otti emphasized that women have always played vital roles in society and deserve stronger representation in decision-making positions. He also urged women across the state to unite, stay politically engaged, and position themselves for leadership roles.

The governor made these remarks while condoling with lawmaker Nnamdi Ibekwe over the death of his wife, Chiamaka Ibekwe, whom he described as a devoted and impactful figure. He encouraged the family to remain strong during the period of mourning.

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s “Renewed Hope” commitment to tackling Nigeria’s security challenges, asserting that the fight against criminal “tyranny” remains a top priority.

Speaking at his Lagos residence during an Eid-el-Fitr gathering as he hosted the Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 Governors on Sunday, the President emphasized that insecurity must not be allowed to overshadow the government’s efforts to provide essential support for the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.
Fresh from a historic three-day State Visit to the United Kingdom, the President revealed that security was a cornerstone of his international engagements.

He reported successful high-level discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, both of whom have pledged collaboration on advanced security equipment and modern technological interventions. These global partnerships are intended to bolster Nigeria’s internal defense mechanisms and provide more robust protection for restive regions like Borno State.

Beyond physical security, President Tinubu addressed the looming economic pressures caused by international volatility. He warned that the ongoing Middle East crisis is likely to spike inflation and weaken purchasing power, particularly regarding energy and transportation costs. In response, he urged the 23 governors in attendance to implement proactive policies and provide local incentives to cushion the blow for their residents, anticipating increased demands from labor unions for greater government support.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), confirmed that the governors are working closely with the National Security Adviser on a legislative framework for the establishment of state police.

The Eid gathering, attended by a bipartisan group of governors from across the federation, served as a display of national unity. President Tinubu thanked the leaders for their commitment to togetherness, urging them to remain resilient in translating their shared visions into programs that directly improve the livelihoods of Nigerians.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed the amended 2022 Electoral Act into law, describing the move as a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

Our correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that President Tinubu, who cautioned against over-reliance on technology, emphasized that while technology will play a bigger role, Nigeria’s voting process remains largely manual. Mr President clared that ballot papers will still be issued and counted manually at polling units, with electronic transmission focusing mainly on sending results to central databases and public viewing portals such as IReV.

On his part, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio further explained that even in areas without network coverage, signed polling unit results will serve as the primary record, eliminating tampering once results leave the polling station.

The amended law also provides for direct primaries, empowering party members to select their candidates themselves, and requires fresh elections in situations where a disqualified winner would have previously allowed a less popular candidate to emerge by default.

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria has condemned the Federal Government’s decision to reverse the ban on sachet and sub-200 millilitre alcoholic beverages.

‎National Chairman of the association, Pharmacist Ambrose Ezeh, described the move as a major setback for public health regulation and child protection in Nigeria.

‎He said the original directive was issued by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control based on evidence-driven harm-reduction strategies.

‎The policy, introduced in 2018 in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, provided a five-year transition period for manufacturers.

‎The deadline was initially set for January 2024 and later extended to December 2025 to allow companies adjust production and distribution systems.

‎Ezeh said the phased approach was consultative and industry-accommodating, making the reversal troubling and inconsistent.

‎He cited data linking alcohol misuse to 29 percent of preventable deaths in Nigeria and nearly half of all road traffic accidents.

‎According to him, over 60,000 alcohol-related deaths were recorded in 2016 alone, including cases of liver disease, cancers and fatal crashes.

‎The ACPN chairman identified cheap sachet alcohol as a key driver of underage drinking due to its affordability, portability and ease of concealment.

‎He warned that minors can independently purchase the small-volume drinks, increasing vulnerability among young people.

‎Ezeh also cautioned that prioritizing commercial interests over public health weakens regulatory credibility and corporate social responsibility.

‎He urged the government to place child protection, regulatory integrity and evidence-based policy above profit considerations.
