Federal Government unveils Fibre Forward Strategic Development project

The Federal Government has unveiled the Fibre Forward Strategic Development project, an ambitious initiative aimed at extending the country's fibre-optic backbone by 90,000 kilometers.

The Federal Government has unveiled the Fibre Forward Strategic Development project, an ambitious initiative aimed at extending the country’s fibre-optic backbone by 90,000 kilometers.

This monumental project, upon completion, will position Nigeria as Africa’s third-largest terrestrial fibre-optic infrastructure.

Announced during the Fibre Forward Strategic Development Workshop, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, highlighted the transformative potential of this $2 billion Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) initiative. “This marks a significant leap forward in our efforts to revolutionize connectivity in Nigeria,” Edun stated.

The minister underscored the strategic importance of the project, calling it a pivotal milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards a digitally driven economy. He pledged the government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the nation’s digital infrastructure.

“Our goal is to ensure the success of this project, which will not only enhance our technological capabilities but also foster economic growth, job creation, and technological empowerment,” Edun affirmed.

The Fibre Forward Strategic Development project is a testament to Nigeria’s dedication to bridging the digital divide. By expanding the fibre-optic network, the government aims to provide high-speed internet access to underserved and rural areas, promoting digital inclusion and equality. This expansion is crucial for fostering economic development, improving educational opportunities, and enhancing access to information and services.

Moreover, the project is poised to generate significant employment opportunities in the tech and telecommunications sectors. The construction and maintenance of the extended fibre-optic network will require a substantial skilled workforce, thereby creating thousands of jobs for Nigerians.

This aligns with the government’s broader objective of reducing unemployment and stimulating economic activity through technological advancements.
