Arsenal FC took a significant step toward securing the Premier League title after a dramatic and controversial 1-0 victory over West Ham United FC at the London Stadium on Sunday.
In a tense London derby, Mikel Arteta’s men found it difficult to break down West Ham’s resilient defence for most of the encounter before Leandro Trossard finally broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute with a deflected strike that proved decisive.
However, the match ended in controversy after West Ham appeared to snatch a stoppage-time equaliser through Callum Wilson. The goal was eventually ruled out following a lengthy VAR review, with officials adjudging that Pablo had fouled Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya moments before Wilson bundled the ball into the net.
Replays showed Pablo placing an arm across Raya’s chest, though West Ham players and supporters argued the contact was minimal. The home side also appealed for fouls involving Declan Rice and Trossard during the same sequence.
Referee Chris Kavanagh and VAR officials spent several minutes reviewing the incident before disallowing the goal, a decision that sparked loud protests from the West Ham faithful while Arteta celebrated in visible relief on the touchline.
The victory moves Arsenal five points clear of Manchester City FC at the top of the table after City defeated Brentford FC 3-0 on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand and could reduce the gap to two points with victory over Crystal Palace FC on Wednesday.
Despite the pressure from City, Arsenal remain in control of the title race and will clinch the Premier League crown if they win their final two fixtures against Burnley FC and Crystal Palace
