G20 Summit Launches Global Initiative to Combat Hunger and Poverty

The G20 summit commenced in Rio de Janeiro with a significant focus on addressing global hunger and poverty. Brazilian President Luiz InƔcio Lula da Silva inaugurated the summit by unveiling a global alliance aimed at eradicating these pressing issues, which has garnered support from over 80 countries, including backing from the African Union and the European Union, as well as various international organizations and philanthropic foundations like the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

President Lula emphasized that hunger and poverty are not merely the results of scarcity but are deeply rooted in political decisions. He pointed out that the world produces nearly 6 billion tons of food annually, making the existence of hunger unacceptable

The summit’s agenda also includes discussions on trade, climate change, and international security, particularly in light of the geopolitical shifts anticipated with the incoming U.S. administration under President-elect Donald Trump. Lula’s administration is keen on maintaining momentum on issues like sustainable development and taxing the wealthy, despite potential pushback from other leaders

The summit is taking place amid heightened security measures in Rio de Janeiro, following recent violent incidents in the city. The Brazilian government has deployed additional troops to ensure the safety of participants

The summit is marked by the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who sent Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov instead. This reflects ongoing tensions related to the Ukraine conflict, which remains a contentious topic among G20 leaders

The G20 summit aims to foster collaboration among member nations to tackle these critical global challenges, with a particular emphasis on creating actionable strategies to combat hunger and poverty effectively.
