Reps Committee Releases Final Draft on Security Reforms

Constitution Review Committee Releases Final Draft on Security Reforms

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has released the final print of proposed constitutional amendments aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and improving the country’s response to emerging security challenges.

The development marks a major step in the ongoing constitutional amendment process being championed by the National Assembly to address critical national issues, particularly insecurity, governance and institutional reforms.

Speaking on the release of the final draft, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, Benjamin Kalu, described the moment as a landmark achievement in the House’s efforts to deliver a more responsive and effective constitutional framework for Nigerians.

According to Kalu, the proposed amendments were carefully developed after extensive consultations with stakeholders, experts, civil society groups and members of the public across the country. He noted that the review process was designed to ensure that the constitution reflects present-day realities and responds adequately to the nation’s evolving security concerns.

He explained that the proposed reforms seek to strengthen institutional capacity, improve coordination among security agencies and provide legal backing for modern security strategies capable of addressing threats such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cybercrime and communal conflicts.

Kalu further stated that the final print represents the collective aspirations of Nigerians who have consistently demanded constitutional reforms that would enhance governance, accountability and national stability. He stressed that the House remains committed to ensuring that the review process produces meaningful changes that would positively impact citizens across the country.

The Deputy Speaker added that the constitutional review exercise demonstrates the National Assembly’s determination to modernize Nigeria’s legal and governance structures in line with global democratic standards and contemporary realities.

He also emphasized the need for cooperation among all arms of government and stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of reforms that would strengthen national unity and improve public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.

The release of the final print is expected to pave the way for further legislative consideration and eventual transmission of approved amendments for the next stage of the constitutional amendment process.

Observers believe the proposed reforms could play a critical role in reshaping Nigeria’s security framework and enhancing the government’s ability to tackle persistent security challenges affecting several parts of the country.
