The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced that birth certificates will not be issued to individuals older than 18 years of age, in accordance with the provisions of the Birth and Death Act of 1992.
Mr. Akin Oyetunde, the NPC State Director of Oyo State, disclosed this information on Tuesday in Ibadan.
He clarified that individuals born before 1992 and those above the age of 18 will instead be issued an Attestation of Birth, as outlined by the Act.
Oyetunde further explained that birth certificates will only be issued to individuals below the age of 18. He emphasized that every local government in Oyo State has birth and death registration centers, with each center equipped to handle registrations.
“The certificates issued at the centers are the same everywhere and acceptable wherever they are tendered,” Oyetunde assured.
Regarding the National Population and Housing Census, which was initially scheduled for 2023 but postponed, Oyetunde affirmed that all preparations for the exercise have been completed. He mentioned that materials for the census have been distributed to local governments, and the commission is awaiting the green light from the Federal Government to proceed with the exercise.
