The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of sensitive election materials ahead of the Ekiti State governorship election and the senatorial and federal constituency by-elections scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.
The materials, which were received from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Ado-Ekiti, are being sorted and prepared for deployment to all 16 local government areas of the state.
INEC officials were seen carrying out the sorting process at the CBN premises, where activities were in full swing under tight security. Police officers have also been deployed to ensure the safe movement of the materials to their designated locations.
Speaking on the exercise, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti State, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, expressed satisfaction with the process, describing it as smooth and well-coordinated. He assured residents that all sensitive materials would be delivered to their destinations on schedule ahead of the polls.
Meanwhile, INEC has announced an increase in the number of registered voters in the state. According to a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, the number of registered voters rose from 987,647 in 2023 to 1,059,360 in 2026.
The commission also disclosed that the number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected increased from 958,052 in 2023 to 1,028,929 in 2026, representing a collection rate of 97.0 per cent and covering 97.1 per cent of registered voters.
INEC noted that it has successfully concluded the PVC collection exercise ahead of the election. The exercise, initially scheduled to end on June 11, 2026, was extended to June 14 following consultations with stakeholders during a meeting held in Ado-Ekiti.
The commission said all necessary arrangements have been put in place to ensure a credible and seamless electoral process across the state.
