The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called off their industrial action after a joint meeting of their respective organs. TUC President Festus Osifo disclosed this development in Abuja, noting that an official communique would be issued shortly.
The suspension of the strike comes in the wake of the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to raising the minimum wage, which President Bola Tinubu has proposed to increase to N60,000.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, announced that a tripartite committee would meet daily for the next week to finalize an agreeable national minimum wage. In response to the labour unions’ demands, President Tinubu has instructed the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, Wale Edun, to assess the cost implications of the new minimum wage.
The Minister is to present a feasible and sustainable figure within 48 hours. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, communicated this directive to the press, emphasizing the President’s commitment to Nigerian workers’ welfare and readiness to negotiate with organized labour based on the committee’s recommendations.
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has reported the partial restoration of the national grid following the suspension of the strike by the NLC and TUC. NUEE National President, Adebiyi Adeyeye, confirmed this in an interview, though full restoration had not been achieved at the time of reporting.
The national grid had collapsed due to the forced closure of Transmission Company of Nigeria substations by organized labour in compliance with the strike.
Despite efforts to restore power, many Nigerians remain without electricity. General Manager of Public Affairs at the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Mrs. Ndidi Mba, has yet to provide a detailed update on the situation.
The resolution of the strike marks a significant step towards addressing the demands of Nigerian workers, with continued negotiations expected to solidify a new minimum wage framework that benefits all parties involved.
