Nigeria Labour Congress Storms Labour Party Headquarters, Demands Leadership Change

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called off their industrial action after a joint meeting of their respective organs. TUC President Festus Osifo disclosed this development in Abuja, noting that an official communique would be issued shortly.

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) staged a protest at the national headquarters of the Labour Party (LP) in Abuja on Wednesday, expressing their dissatisfaction with the current party leadership and alleging a departure from the party’s foundational principles.

The Labour Centre called for the resignation of the national chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, accusing him of steering the party towards personal gain and straying from its original ideology, which was established to advocate for the rights of the working class and the betterment of Nigerians.

Led by the acting general-secretary of the NLC, Comrade Ismail Bello, members of the Congress’ political commission voiced their determination to reclaim the party and restore its original vision.

According to Comrade Bello, Abure had planned to hold a secret national convention of the party without involving the NLC, a move that sparked outrage among NLC members.

Comrade Titus Amba, chairperson of the commission, and Secretary, Comrade Chris Uyot, criticized Abure for operating the party in a “sole administrator” style, which they deemed as contrary to the party’s ethos of solidarity and camaraderie.
