The Lagos State Government has called for stronger collaboration with transport unions in its renewed efforts to curb illegal waste disposal and improve environmental sanitation across the state.
Speaking during a meeting with leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, praised the unions for their continued partnership with the government, particularly their support for the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
Osiyemi described the meeting as a strategic engagement aimed at strengthening cooperation between the government and transport stakeholders in addressing environmental challenges.
He expressed concern over the growing incidence of indiscriminate waste disposal, noting that some residents continue to dump refuse on roads, medians, and other public spaces, thereby undermining efforts to keep Lagos clean.
According to the Commissioner, while the state government remains committed to enforcing environmental regulations, the active involvement of transport unions is crucial due to their widespread presence across the state.
He explained that the government cannot monitor every road at all times and emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility. To support enforcement efforts, Osiyemi disclosed that some union members would work alongside the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) as “waste police” to help identify and report offenders.
The Commissioner warned that individuals caught engaging in illegal waste disposal would face sanctions, stressing that the government would no longer tolerate environmental violations.
He also urged transport union leaders to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and orderliness within their garages, bus stops, and parks, while ensuring that such facilities remain free from illegal activities.
The meeting forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to promote environmental sustainability and foster community participation in keeping Lagos clean and safe.
