The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced the berthing of the largest container carrier to sail on Nigerian territorial waters.
According to the Authority, the vessel christened ‘Maersk Edirne’, berthed at the Lekki Deep Seaport on January 21, 2024.
The ‘Maersk Edirne,’ stretching an impressive 367 meters in length and boasting a breadth of 48.2 meters, carries a Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 142,131 metric tonnes and a Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) of 147,340 metric tonnes. With a total cargo onboard capacity of 3,376 metric tonnes, this colossal container carrier marks a significant advancement in Nigeria’s maritime capabilities.
The vessel’s safe navigation to its berth was orchestrated by the skilled pilots of the Nigerian Ports Authority, showcasing the professionalism and competence of the maritime team.
Commending this achievement, Mohammed Bello Koko, the Managing Director of NPA, expressed gratitude for the support and endorsement of the Authority’s initiatives and investments in employee training and equipment renewal by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola.
Mohammed Koko underscored the groundbreaking nature of this development, highlighting that the berthing of a 367-meter ship at the Lekki Deep Seaport surpasses previous records set by “MV Stadelhorn” and “MSC Maureen” at Onne Port and TinCan Island Port Complexes.
