Liberian President to slash salary by 40%

Joseph Boakai of Liberia has announced a 40% reduction in his salary, aiming to set a precedent for responsible governance

President Joseph Boakai of Liberia has announced a 40% reduction in his salary, aiming to set a precedent for responsible governance and show solidarity with the citizens.

His office stated that this decision is intended to address the intense scrutiny government salaries have been under, as many Liberians express concerns about the rising cost of living.

Liberia, where approximately one in five people live on less than $2 a day, has seen growing discontent over economic conditions. President Boakai, who disclosed in February that his annual salary was $13,400, will now earn $8,000 following the cut.

This move mirrors that of Boakai’s predecessor, George Weah, who also reduced his salary by 25% during his time in office. While some citizens have praised the decision, others question its significance, noting that the president still receives various benefits, including a daily allowance and medical cover.

The presidential office’s budget is nearly $3 million this year, further highlighting concerns about fiscal responsibility and the allocation of government resources.

Anderson D Miamen, from the non-profit organization Centre of Transparency and Accountability in Liberia, welcomed the salary cut. “We just hope that the public will clearly see where the deductions will go and how they will be used to positively impact the lives of the people,” he said.
