The Federal Government has announced plans to provide financial assistance to at least 5,000 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
Each beneficiary is set to receive N10 million to kickstart their entrepreneurial ventures upon completion of the NYSC scheme.
The revelation was made by the Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim, during the inaugural meeting of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management with heads of Corps Producing Institutions (CPI) in Nigeria, held in Abuja on Monday.
Dr. Ibrahim highlighted that this initiative is part of the proposed reforms within the NYSC framework, distinct from the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund program for 2024.
The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to leveraging the vast assets of the NYSC and making strategic investments across various sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, garment making, communication, and digital banking.
Dr. Ibrahim urged the participants, who are custodians of higher education institutions in Nigeria, to prioritize nurturing the intellectual, moral, and civic capacities of the nation’s youth. She underscored the importance of their role in preparing young graduates for active participation in national development efforts.
Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, the Director-General of NYSC, highlighted the objective of the meeting, which is to foster closer collaboration with Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts to enhance the mobilization process. He emphasized the need to address existing challenges and streamline the mobilization process for improved efficiency.
Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, emphasized the importance of innovative strategies in overcoming challenges and promoting best practices in engaging young graduates in national development endeavors. He commended the NYSC for its commitment to operational efficiency through the adoption of technology-driven approaches.
Representing Mr. Wike at the meeting, Mrs. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the Mandate Secretary of Women and Children Affairs, FCT Administration, encouraged active participation and insightful contributions from all stakeholders. She expressed confidence that the engagement would lead to a more responsive, efficient, and impactful NYSC program.
