The 11th edition of the Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games concluded yesterday in Lagos, with the American University in Cairo, Egypt, emerging as the overall winner.
The nine-day tournament, co-hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU), saw 70 universities from across Africa compete in various sports disciplines.
The American University in Cairo secured first place, with Lagos State University (LASU) finishing second, and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) taking third. The University of Ghana placed fourth, while the University of Development Studies, Ghana, rounded out the top five.
At the closing ceremony, held at the University of Lagos, the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Folashade Ogunsola, highlighted the importance of the games in nurturing future sporting talents across Africa.
“These games are not just about competition but about building young sporting champions who will contribute to the development of sports in their universities, countries, and the continent,” she said.
Ogunsola urged participants to take the lessons and experiences gained from the games back to their respective universities to further the cause of sports development across Africa.
The event featured athletes competing in a wide range of sports, including athletics, basketball, football, volleyball, swimming, and more. The games fostered not only competition but also cultural exchange among students from different African countries.
As the games came to a close, it was announced that the next edition of the FASU Games will be hosted by the American University in Cairo, marking the return of the prestigious tournament to Egypt.
