European Union Increases Schengen Visa Application Fees for Non-EU Citizens

The European Union (EU) has announced a hike in Schengen visa application fees for adult African and other non-EU citizens. The fee, previously set at €80, will now stand at €90 per application.

The European Union (EU) has announced a hike in Schengen visa application fees for adult African and other non-EU citizens. The fee, previously set at €80, will now stand at €90 per application. This adjustment, disclosed by the European Commission on its official website, is scheduled to take effect from June 11, 2024.

As per the European Commission’s statement, children aged six years and above but below 12 years will also be subject to revised application fees, set at €45 each.

Schengen visas are essential entry permits for non-EU nationals seeking to make temporary visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period to countries within the Schengen area. The Schengen area encompasses 26 European countries that have abolished passport and other types of border control at their mutual borders, facilitating ease of travel within the region.

This adjustment in visa application fees highlights the EU’s efforts to manage administrative costs associated with visa processing and to align visa fees with evolving economic realities. It is aimed at ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of the Schengen visa application process while maintaining the integrity of the EU’s border management system.

The increase in fees may impact travelers from African and other non-EU countries planning visits to Schengen area nations for tourism, business, or other purposes. However, it underscores the ongoing need for robust visa policies to regulate international travel and ensure security within the Schengen area.

As the revised fees come into effect, non-EU citizens intending to apply for Schengen visas are advised to take note of the updated fee structure and plan their visa applications accordingly.
