Vietnam’s National Assembly unanimously approved army general Luong Cuong as the country’s new president on Monday, making him the fourth individual to hold the position in less than two years.
The vote, held during a special session, saw all 440 deputies endorsing Cuong’s nomination. State television confirmed the unanimous decision, highlighting the appointment as part of ongoing political changes in Vietnam.
Cuong, 67, takes over from To Lam, who had held the role of president alongside his position as general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) during a period of significant political reshuffling. To Lam’s dual role reflected the recent upheaval in the country’s leadership, driven by an anti-corruption campaign that has reshaped the top levels of government.
