United States lawmakers have introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, seeking to address religious persecution and violence, particularly against Christians.

Sponsored by Reps. Riley Moore and Chris Smith, the bill requires the US Secretary of State to submit a detailed report to Congress on Nigeria’s efforts to curb religious violence, protect vulnerable communities, and prosecute perpetrators. Several senior Republican lawmakers are backing the legislation.

The move follows Nigeria’s redesignation as a Country of Particular Concern and signals renewed congressional pressure on Abuja to take stronger action against extremist violence and uphold religious freedom standards.
