University Workers’ Union Direct Members To Begin Nationwide Strike Today Over Withheld Salaries

University workers end warning strike, orders members to resume work and review situation

The leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has instructed their members across university and inter-university centre campuses nationwide to commence a withdrawal of services from Monday, 18 March.

In a memo addressed to the branches of the unions dated Friday, 15 March, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of both SSANU and NASU, signed by the National President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim, and the General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, declared the industrial action as a fulfillment of an earlier threat and ultimatum issued to the Nigerian government regarding the unpaid withheld salaries of their members.

The memo directed branch leaders to ensure total compliance with the directive, emphasizing the need for unity and solidarity among members.

JAC expressed disappointment with the Nigerian government for allowing the situation to deteriorate, questioning the rationale behind the payment of withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) while neglecting their own members.
