Union Threatens NAFDAC with Protest Over Sachet Alcohol Ban

Members of the Food, Beverage, and Tobacco Senior Staff Association of Nigeria have given the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) a 14-day ultimatum to reverse its ban on sachet alcohol.

The association, affiliated with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), issued the ultimatum during a protest held at the NAFDAC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Led by the National President of the association, Jimoh Oyibo, the protest aimed to convey the union’s dissatisfaction with the ban and its impact on its members.

Oyibo emphasized that the ban adversely affects the union’s members, many of whom are employed in distilling and blending companies. He warned that if NAFDAC fails to address their concerns within the stipulated timeframe, the union will escalate protests across NAFDAC offices nationwide.

The ban, which came into effect on February 1, targets alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and glass bottles of 200ml and below.

NAFDAC’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that as of January 31, 2024, no such beverages were registered with NAFDAC.
