The United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA) has officially raised safety concerns regarding the operations of Nigerian airline, Air Peace.
In a letter addressed to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the UK CAA cited violations of aviation safety regulations by the carrier.
This development comes merely three months after Air Peace commenced its Lagos-London route.
The communication from the UK CAA references two mandatory occurrence reports which highlighted specific safety issues. These reports were subsequently forwarded to the NCAA for further action.
The UK CAA’s letter of complaint, titled “United Kingdom SAFA Ramp Inspection Report with reference number: CAA-UK-2024-0217” and “NATS Management System Safety Report,” outlined the violations observed during ramp inspections.
In response, the NCAA has issued a letter to Air Peace requesting clarification on the cited issues. This letter, referenced as NCAA/DOLTS/APL/Vol.11/03624, was dated May 14, 2024, and signed by Capt. O.O. Lawani, the NCAA General Manager of Operations.
The primary concern raised by the UK CAA involves the unauthorized use of Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) functions by Air Peace. The report indicated that the captain of the inspected flight admitted to using an EFB for navigational purposes without proper operational approval.
Furthermore, the inspection revealed that there was no approved mounting device for the EFB, nor were there charging points or backup batteries available, all of which are critical for ensuring the safe operation of the aircraft.
The NCAA’s letter to Air Peace emphasized the need for the airline to address these safety concerns promptly.
The regulatory body has called for detailed explanations and corrective actions to ensure compliance with international aviation safety standards.
