Trump Backs Infantino Over FIFA Controversy

Trump Backs Infantino Over FIFA Controversy

US President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who is facing scrutiny over allegations of misconduct and criticism linked to a failed investment proposal.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Infantino’s leadership, describing him as instrumental to the success and growth of the FIFA World Cup. He warned that replacing the FIFA president could affect the tournament’s future success and profitability.

The endorsement comes as some football bodies, have criticised Infantino’s leadership. However, organisations such as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and CONMEBOL have publicly backed him.

Infantino, who is seeking re-election next year, has denied any wrongdoing. FIFA has also defended its president, accusing critics of attempting to weaken the organisation.

The controversy intensified after FIFA proposed a funding plan that would have provided member associations with a one-time payment and significantly increased future financial support. The proposal sparked opposition, particularly from UEFA, prompting Infantino to withdraw the plan.

Despite the backlash, Infantino maintains that FIFA’s decisions are aimed at strengthening and uniting global football.
