Nigeria’s sprint hurdling sensation, Tobi Amusan, has seen her hopes of clinching an Olympic medal evaporate after she failed to qualify for the final of the 100m hurdles at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The World Record holder, who had entered the Games as one of the favorites for a podium finish, finished third in her semi-final heat, clocking in at 12.55 seconds.
Despite her valiant effort in the first semi-final, Amusan’s time placed her in a precarious position, with two more semi-finals yet to be contested. As the event progressed, her fate hinged on the performances of other athletes, and her qualification hopes were soon in jeopardy.
In the third and final semi-final, Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent delivered a stunning performance, crossing the finish line in 12.44 seconds to secure third place. France’s Cyrena Samba-Mayela also ran an impressive race, clocking 12.52 seconds to finish fourth. Both athletes posted faster times than Amusan, effectively dashing her hopes of advancing to the final round.
In her post-race comments, Amusan expressed her disappointment but remained hopeful about her future in athletics. “It wasn’t the result I hoped for, but I gave it my all. I’ll take this experience and learn from it as I continue my career,” she said.
