President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the essence of democracy, declaring that the rule of law will not only survive but thrive as a lasting legacy of his administration.
Speaking on Wednesday during an inter-faith breaking of fast with leaders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC). at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized that his dedication to a united, democratic Nigeria is a philosophy he will carry for life, assuring political rivals that “there is no threat from any democrat under his watch.“
Mr President stated that Central to his vision for a more robust political system, is the strengthening of internal party democracy through direct primaries.
President Tinubu argued that allowing rank-and-file party members to directly choose their candidates is fundamental to building credible institutions and ensuring the majority has their way while the minority maintains their voice.
Our correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that the IPAC Chairman Yusuf Dantalle, earlier in his remarks, raised concerns regarding the newly signed 2026 Electoral Law, appealing to the President to reconsider the mandatory use of the National Identity Number (NIN) for voter registration and the removal of the indirect mode for party nominations.
The IPAC leadership warned that these requirements could potentially disenfranchise eligible voters and limit the flexibility of political parties in selecting their flagbearers.
On his part, APC Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda praised the President’s “skilful management” of Nigeria’s multi-ethnic landscape. He pledged the party’s total support for the President’s vision, noting that the inclusion of various political factions in the Ramadan fast dinner signaled a commitment to national unity.
