President Bola Tinubu has expanded the Nigeria for Women Programme to reach 25 million beneficiaries nationwide, aiming to promote women’s economic inclusion and national development.
The programme’s pilot phase in six states had already reached over one million beneficiaries, with the scale-up introducing the Happy Woman App Platform, a digital interface connecting women to finance, skills, markets, and essential services.
Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu at the Presidential Launch of the Programme Scale-Up in Abuja, Vice President, Kashim Shettima noted that Nigeria cannot achieve sustainable growth without placing women at the centre of national planning.
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, described the launch as a significant shift in Nigeria’s development trajectory, where women are no longer viewed as peripheral beneficiaries but as central drivers of economic growth, social cohesion, and democratic stability.
The programme has received support from key stakeholders, including the World Bank, which has pledged to strengthen its financing, technical support, and innovation partnerships for the national scale-up. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has also expressed its commitment to empowering women, citing the transformative power of women’s empowerment.
The programme is expected to have a significant impact on Nigeria’s development, with state governments pledging to provide counterpart funding for the successful implementation of women-focused projects.
The National Assembly has also expressed its commitment to enacting legislation to expand women’s access to governance and economic resources.
