Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has come under heavy criticism from Nigerian football fans following the team’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their second AFCON 2027 qualifying match.
Nigeria, who arrived in Bissau hoping to record back-to-back victories after opening their campaign with a win over Madagascar, struggled to contain the hosts and suffered a damaging defeat against the Djurtus.
The hosts took the lead after 16 minutes when Renato Nhaga beat his marker in midfield and released Franculino down the right. The attacker cut inside the penalty area before firing past Nwabali to put Guinea-Bissau ahead.
Nwabali’s reaction to the opening goal quickly became a major talking point, with supporters questioning why the goalkeeper appeared not to attempt a dive as the ball travelled into the net.
Nigeria struggled to recover as Guinea-Bissau continued to apply pressure, eventually extending their advantage through Mama Baldé in the latter stages of the second half.
Álvaro Djaló completed the rout with a third goal in stoppage time, handing Guinea-Bissau a memorable victory and leaving Eric Chelle’s side with serious questions to answer.
The defeat sparked an angry reaction on social media, with several Nigerian supporters directing their frustration at Nwabali and calling for a change in goal.
One fan wrote: “I have seen a lot of terrible Goalkeeping today, this Nwabali guy totally off me.”
Another supporter described the goalkeeper as a liability and questioned his continued place in the team.
“Nwabali is becoming a liability. High time he’s changed,” the fan said.
Others also criticised his apparent lack of movement during Franculino’s opener, with one supporter writing: “Nwabali no even move.”
Another added: “See how Stanley Nwabali stand watch ball enter net. Exactly the same thing on Friday. At least just pretend to dive.”
The result represents a significant setback for Nigeria after their opening victory over Madagascar and puts the spotlight on Chelle’s defensive organisation, the team’s response to pressure and the goalkeeper’s performance.
With the qualifying campaign still underway, the Super Eagles will need to address their shortcomings and respond to the disappointment in Bissau as scrutiny of the team intensifies.
