The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have jointly declared a 7-day warning strike to demand the payment of four months of withheld salaries for their members following the 2022 nationwide strike.
The decision was reached during a meeting of the joint action committee of the two unions held in Akure over the weekend.
Mohammed Ibrahim, the President of SSANU, conveyed the resolution of the meeting to newsmen, stating that the warning strike became necessary after several failed attempts to engage with the Federal Government over the issue.
SSANU and NASU have accused the federal government of failing to pay the withheld salaries despite President Bola Tinubu’s order to pay members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who also participated in the 2022 strike.
The decision to embark on the warning strike underscores the unions’ determination to press for the rights and welfare of their members. With the strike action, SSANU and NASU aim to draw attention to the plight of university staff affected by the non-payment of salaries and to demand prompt action from the government to address the issue.
