The Federal Government is moving to finalise the roadmap and Standard Operating Procedures for Nigeria’s unified national emergency number, with Vice President Kashim Shettima calling for significant progress towards securing formal endorsement by the National Economic Council.
Shettima stressed the need for stakeholders to ensure that the time and resources already invested in the process translate into concrete progress and an effective emergency response framework.
He also assured stakeholders that the necessary resources would be provided to support implementation once the initiative becomes more visible and operational.
“Let’s make progress so that whatever time we have spent here is worth spending. And most importantly, the engine is finance. It is resources to drive the process. And I want to assure you that we will get the resources,” the Vice President was quoted as saying.
The initiative is expected to strengthen coordination among emergency response agencies and provide Nigerians with a more efficient and accessible system for reporting emergencies and requesting urgent assistance.
The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, also expressed the Nigeria Police Force’s full support for the adoption of 112 as Nigeria’s unified national emergency number.
Disu’s endorsement signals the police force’s readiness to participate in a coordinated national emergency response system, which is expected to improve communication between members of the public and relevant emergency agencies.
