Shelley Duvall, the versatile actor celebrated for her role in “The Shining” and her fruitful collaboration with director Robert Altman, passed away on Thursday at the age of 75.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, citing her partner Dan Gilroy, Duvall died in her sleep at her home in Blanco, Texas, following complications related to diabetes.
Born on July 7, 1949, in Fort Worth, Texas, Duvall was discovered by Altman, the maverick filmmaker renowned for his rich characters, sharp social criticism, and keen satire. He cast her in his 1970 dark comedy “Brewster McCloud.”
The saucer-eyed actor developed a broad repertoire, breaking through with 1975’s “Nashville,” and went on to portray memorable and eccentric characters that earned her various awards, including at Cannes for her role in the acclaimed 1977 drama “3 Women.”
Her career was notably defined by her work with Altman, whom she continued to collaborate with because, as she once stated, “he offers me damn good roles.”
