Saudi Arabia has officially announced the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent, marking the beginning of the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar.
The announcement, made on Thursday, sets the stage for several significant religious observances in the Islamic world.
With the sighting of the crescent, the holy month of Dhul Hijjah will commence on Friday, June 14, 2024. This period is particularly significant for Muslims as it includes the annual Hajj pilgrimage, a key pillar of Islam.
The Hajj pilgrimage for the Islamic year 1445 AH-2024 is scheduled to begin on Friday, June 14. Pilgrims from around the world will gather in the holy city of Mecca to perform a series of rituals, culminating in the Day of Arafah on Saturday, June 15. The Day of Arafah, which is considered the pinnacle of the Hajj, is a day of prayer and reflection.
Following the Day of Arafah, Muslims will celebrate Eid Al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” on Sunday, June 16, 2024. Eid Al-Adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.
The festival is marked by special prayers, feasts, and the act of Qurbani, where livestock is sacrificed and distributed among family, friends, and those in need.
The Arafat Day, preceding the festival, holds great importance as it is believed to be a day when sins are forgiven, and prayers are answered. It will be observed on June 15, providing a time for Muslims to engage in deep worship and supplication.
