S/Eagles Set for Madagascar Clash as AFCON Qualifiers Begin

The Super Eagles are set to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) qualifying campaign when they host Madagascar’s Barea at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Friday, September 25.

Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Nigerian time, with Nigeria looking to start the qualifying campaign with three points.

The Super Eagles camp in Ikot Ekpene has been upbeat ahead of the encounter, with players expressing confidence in their ability to secure victory.

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi said the team was determined to win despite acknowledging Madagascar as a good side.

New call-up George Ilenikhena also said the players were focused on nothing less than victory, while goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali welcomed the inclusion of younger players in the squad.

Moses Simon similarly assured supporters that the team would give its best.

Coach Eric Chelle has selected a strong squad for the two AFCON qualifiers, including Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon and other key players.

However, Nigeria will be without Victor Osimhen, who withdrew from the squad after suffering a right adductor muscle strain. Taiwo Awoniyi was subsequently called up as his replacement.

Nigeria will face Guinea-Bissau four days later on September 29 in their second qualifying fixture.

The Super Eagles will then take on Russia in an international friendly on October 6.

With the 2027 AFCON tournament set to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, Nigeria will be looking to make a strong start in the qualifying series with victory over Madagascar in Uyo.
