Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, arrived in Nigeria on Friday as part of their mission to promote the Invictus Games, an initiative aimed at supporting the rehabilitation of wounded and sick service members and veterans.
This marks their first visit to West Africa, as they respond to an invitation extended by the Nigerian military.
The royal couple’s arrival in the capital city of Abuja was met with anticipation and excitement, as they embarked on a journey to meet with wounded soldiers and their families.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the defence spokesman, confirmed their early morning arrival, highlighting the significance of their visit in boosting morale and well-being among Nigerian soldiers.
Nigerian officials have lauded this engagement as a momentous opportunity for the recovery and support of Nigerian soldiers who have been engaged in a 14-year conflict against Islamic extremists.
During their stay, the royal couple is scheduled to participate in basketball and volleyball matches, interacting directly with athletes and demonstrating their solidarity with the spirit of competition and resilience. Additionally, they will engage with local non-governmental organizations in Abuja and Lagos that receive their support, furthering their efforts to foster positive change and empower communities.
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, will take center stage as she co-hosts an event on women in leadership alongside Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization.
