President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step in acknowledging Nigeria’s
tumultuous history by honouring Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists,
known as the Ogoni Nine, who were executed in 1995.
In a bid to address longstanding grievances, Tinubu’s administration aims to heal
deep-seated wounds and foster unity in the nation.
The Ogoni Nine, comprising Ken Saro-Wiwa, Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo,
Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John
Kpuine, were environmental and human rights activists from the Ogoni region in
the Niger Delta. These men were vocal in their opposition to environmental
degradation and the neglect of their region due to oil extraction operations by
multinational corporations, primarily Shell.
Their activism, led by Saro-Wiwa under the banner of the Movement for the
Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), brought significant international attention
to the environmental and human rights issues in the Niger Delta. However, their
outspoken criticism came at a high price. In 1995, under the military regime of
General Sani Abacha, they were arrested, accused of complicity in the murder of
four Ogoni chiefs, and subsequently tried in a military tribunal widely condemned
for lacking fairness and due process. Their execution by hanging drew widespread
international outrage and led to Nigeria’s suspension from the Commonwealth of
Nations.
In a statement released on Monday by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga,
President Tinubu underscored his administration’s dedication to righting the
wrongs of the past and fostering an inclusive approach to governance. “The
President reaffirmed that his administration will actively address historical
grievances and work towards building a united and prosperous nation for future
generations. This vision will be realised through constructive engagement and
mutual respect,” the statement said.
Tinubu acknowledged the profound sacrifices made by Saro-Wiwa and his fellow
activists, highlighting that their memory serves as a reminder of the cost of
advocating for justice and environmental sustainability. “We honour their memory
by recognising the sacrifices made and pledging to strive for a future characterised
by peace, justice, and sustainable development for all communities, particularly
those in the Niger Delta,” President Tinubu added.
