The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has issued a stern warning to contractors involved in the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, stating that any contractor found to be unserious with the Federal Government road project will have their contract terminated and reassigned to more capable contractors.
Umahi made this statement on Saturday during a stakeholders’ engagement on the alignment of Sections 3B and 4 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, held in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom state.
The minister assured the stakeholders and the public of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to the successful completion of the project. He emphasized that out of the total span of 700 kilometers, 107 kilometers, consisting of 27 kilometers of Section 3B and 80 kilometers of Section 4, fall within the boundaries of Akwa Ibom state, making it the fourth longest portion of the entire coastal highway within a single state.
Umahi expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), stating, “We use this opportunity to warn CCECC, out of 35 kilometers, they just completed 2.5 kilometers of double carriageway and 4.5 kilometers on single carriageway; that is very terrible. You talk to them, they say it is because of compensation.” He further noted that the compensation issue had been settled by the Akwa Ibom state governor, Pastor Umo Eno, thus removing any excuses for delays.
The minister emphasized that sufficient funds had been provided by President Tinubu for the project. “Mr. President has given enough money to fund the project; the same thing with Julius Berger,” Umahi stated.
In his directive, Umahi gave the contractors a clear marching order to mobilize to the site. He issued an ultimatum to both CCECC and Julius Berger, giving them one week to remobilize to the site or face the termination of their contracts.
