Obi leads opposition push for 2027 elections

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, debate intensifies over whether the opposition can unseat President Bola Tinubu.

Rivers State elder statesman Kingsley Wali named former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi as the opposition figure most likely to mount a serious challenge. He said Obi built a “rock-solid vote bank” in the South-East and drew youth, first-time voters, and disillusioned citizens across regions, including northern Christian communities.

Wali said many Nigerians view Obi as a credible alternative capable of driving meaningful change, even if he does not fit the “ideal” politician profile.

However, Wali warned that Obi’s passionate support base cannot deliver a national majority alone. He advised Obi to secure his party’s nomination by negotiating, building coalitions, and engaging influential figures like Atiku Abubakar, Chibuike Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai.

“Obi cannot wait for a consensus candidacy to fall into his lap. He must form alliances and make strategic compromises to become a viable presidential candidate,” Wali said.

He stressed that opposition unity and careful political maneuvering will determine whether Obi converts his regional support into a competitive national campaign.
