Organized Labour insist on Planned Nationwide Strike despite last minute talks with National Assembly

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called off their industrial action after a joint meeting of their respective organs. TUC President Festus Osifo disclosed this development in Abuja, noting that an official communique would be issued shortly.

The leadership of the National Assembly and representatives of the Federal Government on Sunday evening, met with the leadership of the organised labour to avert the planned nationwide strike scheduled for today Monday, June 3.

At the meeting, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who said the demands of labour are justifiable, however, appealed to Organised Labour to resolve the issue in the interest of the country, and urged them to consider the government purse, as well as the private sector to avoid disaster.

In his remark, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, emphasised the need for strong collaboration among all the parties, to arrive at a reasonable figure that would be acceptable to all.

Earlier, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in response to the planned strike announced by organised labour, said the N494,000 national minimum wage being demanded, is capable of destabilising the economy and jeopardising the welfare of over 200 million Nigerians.

However, after a four-hour meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly on Sunday evening in Abuja, the leadership of the Organised Labour says there is no going.
