The Federal Government has mandated all outgoing vice chancellors of federal universities to nominate their deputies to serve as acting vice chancellors.
This directive was communicated through a circular from the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki, dated May 28, 2024.
The NUC circular, addressed to the outgoing vice chancellors, follows a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education, which highlighted the imminent end of the tenure of several vice chancellors across the country.
The ministry underscored the urgency of nominating deputy vice chancellors, based on the recommendations of the universities’ senates, to oversee the offices of the vice chancellors in an acting capacity until new governing councils are inaugurated.
The letter from the NUC emphasized the importance of a seamless transition in university leadership to ensure the continuity of academic and administrative functions.
Maiyaki stated that the soon-to-be-inaugurated governing councils of the universities would be responsible for officially appointing acting vice chancellors following their inauguration.
“This interim arrangement is essential to maintain stability and ensure that there is no leadership vacuum in the administration of the universities,” Maiyaki noted. He further explained that the nominations should be expedited to avoid any disruptions in university operations.
The directive has been well-received by the academic community, which views it as a proactive step to uphold the standards and smooth running of federal universities. The nomination process, driven by the recommendations of the universities’ senates, is expected to be completed promptly to facilitate the transition.
