The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions has announced a one-month suspension of its ongoing strike, effective November 5.
The committee, which comprises the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), confirmed the decision in a statement issued on Sunday.
Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU, and Mohammed Ibrahim, President of SSANU, jointly signed the announcement, explaining that the suspension followed a series of extensive negotiations with the Federal Government.
JAC members had embarked on an indefinite strike on October 28, protesting the non-payment of four months’ salaries and demanding the fulfillment of various other agreements.
According to Adeyemi, the decision to temporarily call off the strike was reached after “exhaustive deliberations” with government representatives. These high-level discussions led to what Adeyemi described as an “irrevocable commitment” from the government to address some of the union’s grievances.
As part of the resolution, the Federal Government has pledged to pay two months’ salaries in a staggered arrangement, with the first installment already paid in October 2024 and the second installment scheduled for the end of November.
