Nigeria’s Senate Approves Tinubu’s $800 Million World Bank Loan Request

The Senate on Thursday approved $800 million World Bank loan request by President Bola Tinubu.

The president, in the letter, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, explained that the loan would be used to scale up the National Social Safety Net Programme, as the World Bank facility will aid the federal government make unconditional cash transfer of N8,000 per month to 12 million poor and low income households for a period of six months, with a multiplier effect on about 60 million individuals.

In less than 24 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a request for N500 billion to provide palliatives against fuel subsidy removal, the House of Representatives approved the request by amending the Supplementary budget, thereby granting the request by the president which was considered and passed at yesterday’s plenary.

Addressing House of Reps Press Corps alongside other Principal Officers, the deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, stressed that what the House passed was to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy on Nigerians
