Nigerian Senate Summons Security Chiefs Amid Escalating Insecurity

The Nigerian Senate has summoned the nation’s security chiefs to address the escalating insecurity plaguing the country.

During Tuesday’s plenary, the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, raised a motion on urgent national importance, highlighting the rising incidents of killings, kidnappings, banditry, and other criminal activities across Nigeria.

Senator Bamidele specifically mentioned recent tragedies, including the killings in Agata Local Government Area of Benue State, the brutal murders of 11 residents in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory resulting in victims being killed after ransom payment, and various incidents nationwide where substantial ransoms were paid, but victims were still killed.

The motion also addressed the killing of two traditional rulers in Ekiti State and the abduction of primary school pupils in Ekiti, further exacerbating the country’s insecurity.

Additionally, the Senate noted the unfortunate bomb explosion in Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, which claimed lives and caused extensive destruction of property. The killing of residents in Mangu, Bokkos, and Barkin Ladi communities in Plateau State was also acknowledged.

In response to the motion, the Senate President announced plans for an interactive session with the security chiefs in the following week. Subsequently, the Senate intends to meet with President Bola Tinubu to discuss the outcomes of the security briefing.

The session concluded with the Senate observing a minute’s silence in honor of the deceased victims of insecurity in the country.
