The Nigerian Police Force has warned against planned demonstrations by certain individuals and groups to hold protests in several parts of the country on Democracy Day.
The Force has placed its Zonal Assistant Inspectors General of Police and State Command Commissioners of Police on high alert, directing them to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure robust security arrangements.
The directive emphasizes the need to prevent any breakdown of law and order and includes strategic deployments to protect key infrastructures. The police aim to ensure that any protests that do occur remain peaceful and lawful.
This cautionary measure comes in response to intelligence reports suggesting possible unrest during the planned demonstrations.
In a statement released yesterday, Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi detailed the police’s stance and measures being taken to safeguard public peace. Adejobi highlighted the importance of maintaining order and protecting the rights of citizens while ensuring public safety.
“The Nigerian Police Force is committed to upholding the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest,” Adejobi said. “However, it is imperative that such activities are conducted within the confines of the law to prevent any disruption of public peace and safety.”
Adejobi urged individuals and groups planning to protest to notify the police and request protection to ensure their safety and that of the public. “Those intending to stage a peaceful protest should inform the police and request police protection. This will enable us to make necessary arrangements to ensure that their activities do not result in violence or chaos,” he added.
