Nigerian Army to Conduct Final Disposal of Unexploded Bombs From 2002 Ikeja Cantonment Bomb Blasts

The Nigerian Army is set to carry out the conclusive disposal of unexploded bombs recovered from the
tragic Ikeja Cantonment Bomb blasts of 2002.
Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, announced this in a
statement on Thursday, highlighting the final stage of the exercise, titled “the Final Unexploded
Ordnance Disposal (UXO) task.”

The statement revealed that the exercise, known as “EXERCISE CLEAN SWEEP,” began on October 10,
2023, resulting in the recovery of various calibres of unexploded ordnances. A total of 642 items were
professionally disposed of on October 27, 2023, at the Nigerian Army Range in Owode Ajilete, Ogun
State. The final disposal is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 18, 2023, following the
completion of the site inspection.

Members of the public residing around Owode, Ajilete, and the surrounding areas were urged not to
panic upon hearing explosions, as necessary safety measures have been implemented to ensure the
security of life and property throughout the duration of the exercise.
