Despite receiving 10 nominations across five categories at the 66th Grammy Awards, prominent Nigerian Afrobeats stars, including Burna Boy, Davido, Tems, Ayra Starr, Olamide, and Asake, failed to secure any wins.
The inaugural ‘Best African Music Performance’ trophy went to South African singer Tyla for her 2023 track, “Water.”
All nominations for the Afrobeats stars were announced at the Grammy Premiere ceremony, where numerous awards are presented before the main live telecast. Tems, nominated for her work on the Black Panther theme song “Lift me Up” performed by Rihanna, lost to Billie Eilish “What Was I Made For” for the 2023 fantasy drama ‘Barbie.’
There are a total of 94 categories at the Grammy Awards, with the main live telecast featuring only a portion of them.
In other Grammy results, Kylie Minogue secured her second-ever Grammy Award in the Best Pop Dance Recording category for “Padam Padam,” a viral hit that became a global sensation last year. Additionally, Boygenius, SZA, and Joni Mitchell were among the winners at the afternoon “premiere ceremony” preceding the main event on Sunday. The Beatles also clinched the Best Music Video award for a new dream-like animated clip for “Iām Only Sleeping.”
