Nigeria Police Enforces Uniformed Presence for Stop-and-Search Officers

The Nigeria Police Force has emphasized that officers engaged in stop-and-search duties must be in uniform with clearly displayed names.

The Force’s Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, made this announcement on Monday in response to a video showing four plainclothes policemen stopping a driver on the Lekki-Epe Express Way.

The officers, seeking the driver’s tinted permit, faced resistance as the driver questioned their identities, noting the lack of visible indicators that they were law enforcement officers. In response, Adejobi stated that the officers in question have been identified and are under investigation by the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Zone 2 in Lagos.

Adejobi reinforced the Police Force’s directive, specifying that officers engaged in routine patrol or stop-and-search operations must be in uniform, dressed appropriately, and easily identifiable. He stressed that patrolling in plainclothes is not acceptable, as it can lead to misconduct when officers operate without visible identification.
