The National Assembly has confirmed it will transmit the report on the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution to all 36 state assemblies before December 2025, in line with its timetable.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who leads the Senate Committee on Constitution Review at the weekend, emphasized that no constitutional amendment can be completed without the approval of at least two-thirds of the state legislatures.
Stakeholders were however urged to intensify lobbying efforts at the state level to ensure the adoption of key proposals such as state police, devolution of powers, and local government autonomy.
At the Lagos public hearing, attended by lawmakers and interest groups across the South-West, state legislators reaffirmed their readiness to engage with the review process.
Chairman of the Conference of State Speakers, Right Honorable Debo Ogundoyin, advocated greater power devolution and supported the creation of state police to boost local governance and public safety.
