Lionel Messi scored his 101st goal for Inter Miami, but the MLS champions were held to a 2-2 draw by San Diego on Sunday.
Anders Dreyer put San Diego ahead after 12 minutes, beating goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair with a delicate chip following a pass from Jeppe Tverskov.
Miami responded in the 24th minute when Messi’s curling free-kick from the edge of the area found the net after clipping the inside of the post.
The hosts continued to dominate possession and created several chances, with Messi, Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul all coming close to putting Miami ahead.
Suarez eventually completed the comeback in the 74th minute, firing home after being released by De Paul to make it 2-1.
However, San Diego refused to settle for a defeat. Tverskov again picked out Dreyer with a precise pass over the top, and the Danish forward calmly finished to level the game in the closing stages.
San Diego nearly snatched all three points in stoppage time, but St. Clair denied Kieran Sargeant on the counterattack.
The draw leaves Inter Miami 11 points behind Eastern Conference leaders Nashville with eight regular-season games remaining.
