Lawmaker Detained for Assaulting Bolt Driver

A member of the House of Representatives, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver in Abuja. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, when Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, ordered a delivery of snails from a vendor.

The vendor arranged for Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, to deliver the snails to Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja. When Abuwatseya arrived, he requested payment for the delivery, which led to a heated argument. Ikwechegh allegedly became enraged and assaulted the driver, slapping him repeatedly and threatening to make him “disappear.”

The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage. The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that Ikwechegh is currently being detained and is being investigated for assault.

This incident has once again brought to light the issue of impunity among public officials in Nigeria. Many Nigerians have called for Ikwechegh to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

It is important to note that this is an ongoing investigation, and the details of the incident may change as more information becomes available.
