The Lagos State Government has announced a two-week registration notice for all public transport drivers, specifically Korope and Danfo bus drivers, as part of its restructuring plans to enhance the commuting experience in the state.
This announcement was made during a meeting with bus operators and union leaders, where the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, outlined the strategic move.
Giwa emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Strategic Transportation Master Plan for Lagos State, aiming to regulate and integrate the informal transport sector into the State’s Bus Reform Initiative. The Lekki/Epe corridor has been selected as the pilot area for this project.
Describing the current state of bus operations as chaotic, Giwa highlighted the need for collaboration to successfully implement the reforms.
The Ministry of Transportation and Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) have inspected the Lekki-Epe corridor to identify traffic flow limitations and have developed a systematic framework to address these challenges.
Key components of the restructuring plan include: Restructuring of Unregulated Public Transport, Deployment of High-Capacity Buses, Reallocation and Relocation of Minibuses, Re-registration and Recertification of Buses, Introduction of E-Ticketing System, Provision of Transport Infrastructure, Regulation and Standardization, Improved Transportation Services.
Giwa further detailed that the restructuring plan will be implemented in phases. He urged transport operators to register with the Ministry of Transportation within the next two weeks to participate in the program. Registered operators will be allotted specific routes by the ministry to ensure compliance with the new strategy.
The special adviser issued a stern warning to operators who might contravene the new regulations, stating that violators will be fined and risk forfeiting their vehicles if they fail to comply with the fines. He emphasized that the state government will not tolerate willful disregard of its Transport Sector Reform Law.
